Cracked Heels
Cracked skin is a common problem. Dry skin can happen for many different reasons including lack of sweat ducts, dry climate, change in inappropriate shoegear, friction, not using sock etc. Cracks or fissures can cause pain, and wounds that could potentially become infected. Below is a diagram of the layers of the skin. (Top layer epidermis, middle-papillary dermis, bottom-reticular dermis). Lack of sweat may be a sign of decreased nerve function.
Increased protection and appropriate dressings should be considered. Moisturizing may be helpful if an open sore is not present. A full evaluation by your foot and ankle surgeon should be strongly considered. [email protected]
