Joint Pain

Picture
A joint is a term used when bones (independent of each other) make contact. They are connected together by ligaments, capsule, tendons or muscles to allow for movement. Cartilage is present is present at the joint interface which helps to separate the bone and provide padding and shock absorption. Joint pain and swelling can happen for many different reasons. This may be due to irregularities in the joint, loss of cartilage, swelling of the soft tissue around the joints, or autoimmune disease where the tissues are being attacked by one self. There are more than 30 joints of the foot. There are many different types of joints which allow different types of motion.

Common findings are tenderness swelling stiffness redness bruising increased warmth for decreased movement.

Common causes of joint pain and swelling include trauma, infection, inflammation, structural problems, gout, bursitis , and arthritis.
After a detailed physical examination your Doctor may use additional imaging modalities such as x-ray or ultrasound to determine the cause(s)of your joint pain and swelling. Occasionally blood tests are also necessary to help diagnose/rule out certain types of arthritis.

Treatments for joint pain or swelling can include: rest, ice, elevation, anti-inflammatories such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID's), massage , and physical therapy exercises.
An appointment with your foot Doctor can help you diagnose the cause of your joint pain and swelling and provide you with a detailed treatment plan to better control your problem.
