Ganglion Cyst
A ganglion cyst is a common skin lesion where a sac filled with a jellylike fluid originates from a tendon sheath or joint capsule. These lesions can occur in all sizes but are usually round and elevated. When a light is held next to it you can usually see through then skin without increased obstruction.
Causes of these cysts are unknown but likely caused to a weakening of the tissue that incases structures preventing friction.
Symptoms include a visible soft (occasionally firm) round bump likely noticed around a joint or tendon. Occasionally pain can occur due to repetitive irritation.
An examination by your doctor should be performed to rule out other soft tissue or bony lesions/abnormalities. Your doctor, after examination, may take x-rays or use an ultrasound to adequately visualize the area.
If found to be a ganglion cyst treatment can include monitoring, offloading modifications to prevent irritation, removal of fluid from the lesion (which is also helpful for the diagnosis), and surgical removal. Ganglion cysts can have a relatively high reoccurrence rate therefore it is important to talk to your doctor about which treatment is right for you.
