Sweaty Feet
The "sweaty foot" is a common condition found in individuals who produce excessive moisture/sweat. This is usually worse in in the summer months as temperatures become hotter. The hands and feet have increased number of sweat glands to allow for perspiration and thermal regulation. With the use of shoe gear and socks this condition is usually worse at due to lack of evaporation. This excessive moisture allows bacteria to multiply causing an unpleasing odor. Occupations that require plastic/rubber boots or those where moist conditions are involved symptoms may also see the symptoms.
At home care would involve the use of frequent hygiene/bathing, appropriate shoegear with increased breath ability (this is often found with mesh style athletic shoegear) and synthetic material socks such as dry wick, and topical drying agents such as baby powder.
If symptoms continue it is important to make a visit with your foot and ankle surgeon as there are various treatment options available including: lifestyle changes, shoe gear alternatives, topical medications, and injectable medications (such as Botox) that may allow for a prompt resolution of symptoms.
